Happy FriYAY: Time to Get Cozy

Flannel sheets, flannel jammies, warm slippers and gloves—let’s make everything cozy!

As a resident of Southern California, by the time I’m ready to buy cozy clothes and housewares, most of the cute stuff is sold out.

But not this year! This year, I’ve ordered jammies, sweats, flannel sheets, slippers, and gloves early. And not just for me, for the whole family. That’s right, I’ve even ordered matching pajamas for our family.

So let’s dive in and I’ll share what I’m loving this (almost) winter:

FLANNEL JAMMIES:

Originally, I ordered these buffalo check flannel jammies from Target for our family, but the sizing was a little weird and the flannel was thin. I think for most people it would be perfectly fine for novelty pajamas, especially if you buy a new set every year (You can’t beat the price on these).

But since this will be Denis’s only real pajamas (he prefers sweats and old t-shirts), I returned them and ordered a set from the Draper James collaboration with Land’s End (they’re 30% off right now!).

Since we celebrate both Christmas and Hanukah in our house, I try to avoid leaning too heavily into the red Christmas stuff when I can avoid it, which is why I ordered the Majestic Green Angie Plaid (Men | Women | Kids). That said, the gingham jammies are adorable (or maybe it’s just that Reese Witherspoon is adorable?)

Last year, I spotted these super cute flannel joggers from Abercrombie, but by the time I got around to ordering them, they were sold out. When they came back into stock this year, I knew I didn’t want to miss out again. If you’re a Millennial and haven’t been to Abercrombie since the early aughts, the sizing is much more reasonable than I remember. I often go back and forth between 4s and 6s at other stores and the small was just right.

FLANNEL BEDDING FOR KIDS:

As much as I love flannel bedding, I basically agreed in my marriage vows that I would give it up for Denis (he runs so warm, I don’t even want to sit next to him when it’s hot outside, so flannel is pretty much his nightmare). BUT that doesn’t mean I can’t get Benji on the flannel train early.

Playful Foxes | Pink Village | Star Dust | Plaid | Fish | Skiers | Woodland (Deer) | Grey Penguins | Mountain Lodge with Acorns

Because I’m still in the midst of refreshing Benji’s room, I wanted to make sure I was picking sheets that would coordinate with everything that’s going on in there.

I ended up going for the Mountain Lodge pattern (I felt like it played off the trees on his wallpaper and didn’t clash with his gingham-ish rug) and the penguins (we have a bit of a penguin thing in our household, though I can’t remember when it started or why). I doubt we’ll keep both, but sometimes even mood boards aren’t enough for me to know what will look good, so I need to see what works in real life. (Trying things and returning what doesn’t work is a big part of making things look good.) I could have also done the Woodland pattern with the deer…. Should I try those, too?

BUT my favorite ones I’ve seen so far are those foxes on a minty background. Unfortunately, that green is almost the exact same color as Benji’s new quilt and I just know they won’t look good together (sigh).

OTHER COZY GOODIES:

Let’s wrap this up with a few non-flannel cozy items that I’m loving right now:

Burton Sapphire Gloves: Sure, I’d love a pair of leather gloves, but I know myself well enough to know I will quickly destroy the camel leather loves I covet. I bought these and few years back and they served me so well. They are warmer than you need in LA, and I used them very happily on a trip to England and Scotland in November. But I think I lost them during our move to Silver Lake, so after a year of hoping they’d turn up, I finally bought a new pair. The mediums fit me perfectly, though if you’re If you’re on the petite side, I recommend the small size. They’re tech-friendly, so no need to brave the cold just to open your phone.

Laura Ashley Bunny Slippers: How freaking cute are these?! Also, did you know Laura Ashley was still around? Because I didn’t! I bought the pink and the grey ones for Benji to choose between, and he picked the grey. We gave the pink ones to a family friend’s three year-old girl who loved them and she immediately starting scooting around in them. Benji’s on the fence about his, which I think are a different cut/style than the pink ones, but I’m still holding out hope he’ll get on board.

Bombas Slipper Socks: These are the slippers that Benji likes the most, probably because they are the most like regular socks. There are only a few of the slippers lined with the wool-blend left, but Bombas just released some Sherpa-lined slippers, which are super cozy and cute.

Shearling Birkenstocks: Have I mentioned that I have terrible feet? Seriously, they are some of the flattest feet you’ve ever seen. And then you add in the plantar-fasciitis and the heel spurs—oof, it’s bad. When I’m outside during most of the year, I usually wear my Madrid Birkenstocks (or my Sorel Emilie Chelsea Boots with orthotics during the winter), and that keeps my feet well-supported. But walking around barefoot in-doors is no-bueno for me, so during last winter’s lockdown, I finally invested in these shearling Birkenstocks (mine are yellow because why not—but they all look great). They are perfect for LA and if it’s ever a little too cold, then I just pop on a pair of socks.
